Fenwick Island is a small town on the Delaware side of the Maryland line. It is quiet, which is the entire reason people pick it, and it is six miles from Ocean City, which is the entire reason that quiet is workable. You get a calm beach town and you are fifteen minutes from a boardwalk when the kids want noise.

We run the family entertainment complex on Route 1 here, so we have a stake in you visiting. We will still be straight about what this town is and is not.

Why Fenwick instead of Ocean City

Ocean City is louder, bigger, has the boardwalk, and has more of everything. Fenwick has a quieter beach, easier parking, and less traffic. Families with young kids tend to prefer Fenwick. Families with teenagers who want a boardwalk at night tend to prefer Ocean City.

The good news is you do not really have to choose. Six miles is nothing. Plenty of families stay in Fenwick or Bethany and drive into Ocean City for a night or two.

Where to stay

Fenwick is mostly rentals: houses and condos rather than big hotels. That suits a week with a family, because a kitchen cuts your food bill more than any coupon will. Bethany Beach is five miles north and has more rental inventory. Ocean City has the hotels if you want a front desk.

A week that actually works

The mistake most families make is scheduling something big every day. Seven straight days of activities with kids ends in exhaustion by Thursday. Here is a rhythm that holds up:

Day 1, Saturday. Arrive and do nothing.

Check in, groceries, beach for an hour, dinner at the house. Do not plan anything. Travel days are already a lot.

Day 2, Sunday. Beach day.

Full beach day while everyone is still fresh. Fenwick's beach is calm and the parking is manageable.

Day 3, Monday. Waterpark morning.

Thunder Lagoon Waterpark opens at 10am and the first two hours are the quietest of the day. A 2-hour adult pass is $30, kids under 42 inches are $14, and you can add 2 more hours at the window if nobody is ready to leave. Go at open, be out by noon, and the afternoon is still yours.

Day 4, Tuesday. Ocean City day.

Drive the six miles, do the boardwalk, let the kids have the noisy day. Come back to quiet.

Day 5, Wednesday. Beach, then mini golf at night.

Beach in the day. Viking Golf is open until 11:30pm, and playing 19 holes after dark when the heat finally breaks is genuinely the nicest time to do it. Adults $13, kids under 42 inches $8, and ages 3 and under play free with a paying adult.

Day 6, Thursday. Waterpark again, cheaper.

This is where the multi-day pass earns its keep. Day 2 at the waterpark is 20% off and Day 3 is 40% off. Waterpark only, but if the kids loved Monday, Thursday is a lot cheaper.

Day 7, Friday. Go-karts and the last night.

Viking Go-Karts is $10 per kart, and that is per kart and not per person, so a double kart with a parent driving and a kid riding is still $10 total. Solo drivers need to be 56 inches or taller. Double kart drivers must be 16 or older and the passenger needs to be under 56 inches to fit.

Eating

Hungry Viking is on site and does boardwalk food: funnel cakes, fried Oreos, burgers, fries, pizza, hot dogs, and chicken tenders, with Coca-Cola products. Next door, Hershey's Island Creamery does hand-scooped ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes and snow cones. They are a separate business, but they are right there, and their Funnel Cake Sundae is the thing people come back for.

When to come

July and August are the busiest and the most expensive. June and September are the quiet secret: the water is still fine, the crowds thin out, and rentals drop. If your kids are not school-aged yet, September on this coast is close to ideal.

What to pack that people forget

• Water shoes. For the beach, the waterpark, everything. Hot concrete and hot sand are the same problem.
• More towels than you own. Beach towels and waterpark towels are not the same towels by day three.
• A cheap wagon. The single best purchase for a beach week with small kids. Hauling chairs, towels and a cooler by hand gets old on day one.
• Sunscreen for the whole week. Buying it at the beach costs double. Buy it at home.
• One indoor thing. A puzzle, cards, a game. There will be one bad weather afternoon and you will be glad.

The rainy day plan

There will be one. Summer storms here usually come through in the afternoon and leave. The move is to flip your day: do the beach or the waterpark in the morning while it is clear and save the indoor thing for the afternoon.

If the rain clears by evening you are fine. Viking Golf is open until 11:30pm and Viking Go-Karts runs until 11:30pm, so a storm at 4pm has not cost you the day. Boardwalk arcades in Ocean City are six miles south, and the Rehoboth outlets are about 25 minutes north if you need a proper indoor afternoon.

Getting around

You want a car. Fenwick is small and walkable within a block or two of wherever you are staying, but the beach towns are spread along Route 1 and there is no useful transit connecting them. The upside is that everything is close.

One thing we would tell our own family

Do not schedule seven days. Schedule four and leave three open. The days people remember from a beach week are almost never the ones that were planned, and a family that has done something big every single day is not having fun by Friday, they are just tired.
