If you are staying in Ocean City and want a waterpark, you have two real options. Jolly Roger Splash Mountain, which is in Ocean City proper. And Thunder Lagoon, which is ours, six miles north in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

We are going to be straight with you about this comparison, including the parts where Jolly Roger is the better call. We would rather you have a good day somewhere than a mediocre day here.

The short version

Jolly Roger Splash Mountain

Jolly Roger is the bigger park, and there is no point pretending otherwise. They have a wave pool, a larger footprint, more attractions, and they are attached to an amusement park. If your family wants a full day with maximum variety and you are staying in Ocean City, that is a genuinely good choice and it is closer to you.

The tradeoffs are the usual ones for a bigger park. More people, longer lines in peak season, and it is a full-day commitment at a full-day price. With young children, that can be more day than you actually want.

Thunder Lagoon

We are smaller. Six water slides, a 400-foot lazy river, a tipping Viking ship, an activity pool, and an 800 square foot kiddie pool.

Three things make people drive the six miles up Route 1:

• You buy time, not a day. A 2-hour pass, and you add 2 more hours only if you actually want them. A waterpark afternoon with a five year old is often two good hours and then a meltdown. Paying a full-day rate for that never made sense to us.
• Parking is free. On site, no charge, no shuttle. Anyone who has parked in Ocean City in July knows what that is worth.
• You can see your kids. The park is small enough that you can sit in one place and watch both the slide exit and the kiddie pool.

Price comparison

Our 2026 prices are below. We are not going to publish Jolly Roger's prices here because they set their own and they change, so check them directly. What we will say is that comparing on sticker price alone misses the two things that actually move the number: parking, and whether you are buying a full day you will not use.

The six miles

From Ocean City, we are about 15 minutes north on Route 1. That drive is the whole decision for most families. What you get for it is free parking, a shorter commitment, and a smaller crowd. What you give up is convenience if you do not have a car.

What else is at our location

Both parks have mini golf and go-karts, so that is not a differentiator on its own. What is worth knowing is the hours. Our Viking Golf runs to 11:30pm and Viking Go-Karts runs to 11:30pm, so the evening is genuinely usable here. The waterpark closes at 6pm, but the night is not over.

Hungry Viking does the food: funnel cakes, fried Oreos, burgers, fries, pizza, hot dogs, chicken tenders, and Coca-Cola products. Hershey's Island Creamery is next door for ice cream. They are a separate business but they are right there.

Honest recommendation

If you are staying in Ocean City without a car, or your family wants one big all-day park with a wave pool, go to Jolly Roger. That is the right answer and we are not going to talk you out of it.

If you have a car, you want a couple of hours rather than a whole day, you have a range of ages including a toddler, or you are tired of paying to park, the six miles up to Fenwick Island is worth it. That is who we are built for.

What the drive actually looks like

Six miles north on Route 1 from Ocean City. In June or September that is a genuine 12 to 15 minutes. In the middle of a July Saturday, Route 1 backs up and it can be 25. Plan around that if you are coming at peak.

The one thing that makes the drive worth it regardless: you park for free when you get here. No garage, no meter, no shuttle, no walking six blocks with a toddler and a cooler.

Before you go, either park

• Check the weather, not the forecast. Both parks close for lightning. A 60% chance of rain is often one loud hour at 3pm and five dry ones before it.
• Measure your kids. Our child rate is under 42 inches. Height rules decide your bill at any waterpark.
• Decide how long you actually want. This is the real difference between us. We sell 2 hours, and you add 2 more at the window if you want them. Most big parks sell you a day up front.
• Bring water shoes. True everywhere, forgotten everywhere.

The evening question

Something worth factoring in that price comparisons never cover. Our waterpark closes at 6pm, but Viking Golf runs until 11:30pm and Viking Go-Karts runs until 11:30pm as well.

So a day here is not really a waterpark day. It is a waterpark morning, an afternoon off, and then mini golf under the lights at 9pm once the heat has broken. For families staying a week, that shape tends to matter more than the ticket price.

One more honest note

We are a family business and Jolly Roger is a much larger operation. We are not going to pretend we match them on scale, and we are not trying to. The reason to drive six miles is that a smaller park with time-based pricing and free parking is a better fit for some families. If that is not your family, go have a great day at the bigger park. Genuinely.
